For over twenty years, the designers and builders at Ortmann Concrete have had the pleasure of working with St. Louis area homeowners to create stunning outdoor features that reflect their personal style and meet their functional needs. With decades of experience, we can confidently say that no two projects are ever the same. Every custom concrete patio and walkway installation is a unique blend of artistry and skilled craftsmanship.
Your outdoor spaces should be an extension of your home—reflecting your personality, lifestyle, and the needs of your family. There are only two mistakes you can make when designing your patio and walkways:
Letting someone talk you out of your vision because it’s different
and
Not calling Ortmann Concrete to help bring that vision to life.
Looking for some inspiration to get started? Here are some creative patio and walkway installation ideas to transform your outdoor living space.
Go Down the Garden Path
This idea works best in a larger mixed landscape.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a spacious yard with trees, flower beds, or other landscaping features, a concrete walkway that winds through your outdoor space can create an elegant, inviting atmosphere. Walkways help define different sections of your yard, creating a sense of structure while also providing a charming, meandering path to enjoy your landscape.
While patios are traditionally positioned directly next to the house, some homeowners opt for a private outdoor retreat—a patio with a pavilion set further back in the yard. This creates a peaceful getaway for reading, stargazing, or simply unwinding. Pairing a walkway with a detached patio enhances the experience, adding flow and accessibility to your backyard oasis.
When you’re ready to discuss patio and walkway installation, Ortmann Concrete is here to help you design a plan that brings your vision to life.
Travel Back in Time
This concept works for any size yard.
If you love the charm of a rustic setting, a stone-textured custom concrete patio and walkway can bring that old-world appeal to your backyard. Whether you’re drawn to the warmth of an English garden-style escape, the rugged charm of a cabin-inspired retreat, or a traditional countryside aesthetic, Ortmann Concrete can help you achieve the perfect look.
A fire pit or outdoor fireplace is a great addition to a rustic outdoor space. Not only does it provide warmth on cool evenings, but it also evokes the cozy atmosphere of simpler times. Choose from different fuel options—wood-burning, propane, or natural gas—depending on your needs. Fire pits also serve as an excellent backup for cooking in case of power outages!
To fully embrace the tranquility of your outdoor retreat, consider making it a tech-free zone—a place where you can disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature. Studies show that reducing screen time can improve mental well-being, and what better way to unwind than in your own peaceful backyard sanctuary?
When selecting materials for your patio, walkway, and retaining walls, choose stamped concrete that aligns with your desired aesthetic. Ortmann Concrete works with leading suppliers to offer a wide range of high-quality, durable pavers, including those that mimic natural stone or rustic brick.
Make Your Patio An Oasis
This is perfect for small backyards. Even with limited space, you can transform your outdoor area into a private retreat by carefully designing your patio and walkways. Create a cozy ambiance by incorporating:
- A pavilion with soft LED lighting for evening relaxation
- A small fire pit or outdoor kitchen for entertaining
- Comfortable outdoor furniture arranged for conversation
- Thoughtfully selected trees, flowers, and decorative elements
To complete the design, add a walkway that seamlessly connects different areas of your yard. Whether leading from your back door to the patio or wrapping around the house, a custom walkway creates a natural invitation to step outside and enjoy the fresh air.
A seating wall can be an excellent addition to a patio oasis—offering built-in seating while also serving as a decorative border. Seating walls create a warm and welcoming atmosphere and provide an ideal space for potted plants, lanterns, or other outdoor decor.
Follow The Yellow Brick Road
No two homeowners are the same, and your outdoor space should reflect your unique style! If you have a one-of-a-kind vision for your patio or walkway, Ortmann Concrete is ready to bring it to life.
- Have you seen specific or mixture of concrete textures that you love?
- Do you want a bold, custom pattern that stands out?
- Are you inspired by different styles but unsure how to blend them seamlessly?
No problem! The team at Ortmann Concrete specializes in custom concrete patio and walkway designs tailored to your specific vision. Whether you want a traditional, contemporary, or eclectic look, we’ll help you craft something unique that enhances the beauty of your home and landscape.
Islands in the Sun and Shade
This idea works best in larger yards.
With careful planning, you can use walkways and patios to create distinct zones in your backyard—separate “islands” for different outdoor activities. This layout is ideal for:
- An outdoor kitchen under a pavilion
- A fire pit or fireplace with built-in seating walls
- A dining space with a table and chairs for outdoor meals
- A play area for children
- A reading nook surrounded by lush greenery
Raised flower beds and retaining walls can serve as beautiful dividers between these spaces, adding depth and dimension to your landscape. By incorporating strategically placed walkways, you’ll create a natural flow between each area while making your yard feel expansive and inviting.
